| Main Responsibilities | Director of the Mediterranean Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (Tunis, Tunisia). Chief Editor of The Graduate Journal of Mathematics. Associate Editor The Tunisian Journal of Mathematics. |
| Short Vitae |
I got my BSc in Electrical Engineering from
Michigan State University, then my Ph.D. in Mathematics from
Stanford University.
I spent some years of postdoc between the
Centre de Recherche Mathematiques at Montreal,
and the
Fields Institute in Toronto. I then moved to
University of British Columbia as a lecturer and a research fellow at the
Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences.
In 2000 I was appointed at the University of Lille1, and became a member of the
Laboratoire Painlevé (Unité Mixte de Recherche, UMR-CNRS 8524).

Founding Member of the
Southern Mediterranean University in Tunis. Member of the Groupement de Recherche GDR 2875, Topologie Algébrique et Applications. |
| Research Area |
My fields of mathematical research and interest are in
Algebraic Topology (string
topology, homotopy theory, manifold theory) and in
classical Algebraic Geometry
(Riemann surfaces).
Recent research involves studying spaces of configurations on manifolds and their analogs; like permutation products, finite subset spaces and barycenter spaces. A common thread in much of my research is the topology of function spaces like loop spaces, holomorphic mapping spaces and spaces of embeddings. These are topics with applications to homotopy theory, mathematical physics (gauge theory, sigma models), non-linear analysis (problems of N-body type) and moduli spaces. Instructive links about my area of research can be found here |
Other Interests |
I have a strong interest in urban planning and in environment
protection (mostly pertaining to Tunisia). I write newspaper articles
from time to time. You can read me here
