Abstract

We establish an explicit inequality for best uniform approximation on the unit circle of Markov functions both by meromorphic and by rational functions. Both bounds are sharp up to a constant. In the proof we make use of AAK theory, an essential ingredient are bounds for ratios of singular values of related Hankel operators. Finally we apply our results to the problem of optimal stable model reduction of scalar transfer functions in linear system theory.
